An endodontist is a dental specialist with additional training in diagnosing and treating diseases on the internal structures of teeth. Endodontists limit their practice to specifically those procedures that involve the prevention and/or elimination of diseases of pulpal origin.
Endo is the Greek word for inside and odont is Greek for tooth. Endodontic treatment treats the inside of the tooth.
To understand endodontic treatment, it helps to know something about the anatomy of the tooth. Inside the tooth, under the white enamel and a hard layer called the dentin, is a soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue and creates the surrounding hard tissues of the tooth during development.
The pulp extends from the crown of the tooth to the tip of the roots where it connects to the tissues surrounding the root. The pulp is important during a tooths growth and development. However, once a tooth is fully mature it can survive without the pulp, because the tooth continues to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it.
Endodontic treatment is necessary when the pulp, the soft tissue inside the root canal, becomes inflamed or infected. The inflammation or infection can have a variety of causes: deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or a crack or chip in the tooth. In addition, an injury to a tooth may cause pulp damage even if the tooth has no visible chips or cracks. If pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess.

During intravenous sedation (IV sedation), an anti-anxiety drug is administered into the bloodstream to achieve a state of "deep conscious sedation." Although you will not actually be asleep, you will enjoy a heightened state of relaxation and probably won't remember much about the procedure afterwards. Your appointment will be a dream and hours in the chair will feel like minutes.

Fees for endodontic therapy will vary based upon the particular tooth in need of treatment and the problem that tooth is having. We are a participating network PPO provider for a few insurance carriers, in addition, we also participate with a limited number of HMO (DMO) carriers.
We require insurance information be obtained at the time the appointment is made in order to estimate the patients portion due at the time of treatment. Keep in mind that while dental insurance may cover part or all of the cost for treatment, some policies limit coverage. Most HMO (DMO) policies will have a co/payment and a referral is generally needed from the referring dentist. It is the patients responsibility to bring the correct referral forms to our office.
A broken appointment of less than 24 hours will be subject to a $50.00 fee. In addition, this will also apply to the rescheduling of a no-show appointment.
Kingwood Endodontics uses the services of a highly distinguised anesthesiologist who will administer the IV sedation process and monitor our patient throughout the dental procedure.
Dr. Clark Whitmire maintains a private academic anesthesiology practice in Houston. He earned his DMD degree from the University of Alabama and completed a Comprehensive Residency in Anesthesiology at the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He is a Fellow in the College of Legal Medicine and a Fellow in the American College of Dentists.
Sedation dentistry can put you at ease and virtually eliminates the pain associated with dental procedures. Intravenous sedation is one of several options available to significantly reduce your fears and discomfort.

An Apicoectomy, or Root-End Resection, is the removal of the root tip and the surrounding infected tissue of an abscessed tooth. This procedure may be necessary when inflammation and infection persists in the area around the root tip after root canal therapy or root canal retreatment
Retreatment is necessary when bacteria have re-entered the tooth. This is usually due to decay or untreated canal areas. The patient may experience swelling or pain in chewing.
Sometimes a patient may have no symptoms, but is referred to us by their family dentist because an x-ray shows that there is a problem with a tooth that has previously undergone root canal therapy.
Step 1: After the tooth is "numbed", the canal system will be reopened to remove the previous root canal material. This may involve removing a crown, post and core material. Sometimes we are able to make a small hole in the existing restoration and work through that opening. The canals are then thoroughly cleansed and shaped along their entire length.
Step 2: The canals are refilled with gutta-percha and the opening is sealed with a sterile cotton pellet and a temporary filling.
Step 3: The tooth is restored by your family dentist within a couple of weeks. If your existing crown can be saved, then you will need to have it repaired. If you do not have a crown, it will probably be recommended. With time, the bone will heal where the bacteria was removed.
